How to use Spin

Everything the wheel can do, from your first spin to sharing a wheel with a whole class.

What is Spin?

Spin is a random picker wheel. Type in names, choices or prizes, spin, and the wheel lands on one at random. Use it to settle where to eat, call on a student, pick who goes first, or draw a giveaway winner live on stream.

There is nothing to sign up for. Your wheels save in this browser as you work, and any wheel can be shared as a link.

Add entries

  1. Type an entry in the box at the top of the Entries panel and press Enter, or press the + button.
  2. To add many at once, paste a list. Each line becomes its own entry.
  3. Click the title above the wheel to rename it.

A wheel holds up to 500 entries of up to 100 characters each.

Spin the wheel

  1. Click the wheel, press the Spin button in its center, or press Space.
  2. The wheel slows down and stops. The slice under the pointer on the right is the winner.
  3. The winner appears in a pop-up. Press Done to leave them on the wheel, or Remove from wheel to take them off.

Every winner is listed under Results, newest first. The list keeps the last 100 spins; Clear empties it.

Edit entries

Click any entry to change its text. Each row also has its own controls:

Picture
The image button inside the field adds a picture to that entry, drawn on its slice. Press × to remove it.
Duplicate
Adds a copy of the entry. Each copy is its own slice, so a duplicated entry has double the chance.
Checkbox
Untick it to keep the entry in your list but leave it off the wheel. Tick it to bring it back.
Delete
Removes the entry. Press Undo in the message at the bottom of the screen if you didn't mean it.

Below the box, Shuffle mixes up the order, Sort puts entries in alphabetical order, and Clear removes them all (with Undo).

Odds & colors

Open the Odds & colors tab to see every entry with its color, its weight and its exact chance of winning.

  • Weight runs from 1 to 100. An entry with weight 3 gets a slice three times as big as weight 1, and is three times as likely to win.
  • Color overrides the wheel's palette for that entry. Labels switch between dark and light text automatically so they stay readable.
  • Reset weights & colors puts every entry back to weight 1 and the default palette.

You can also set these right in the Entries list. Use the Show toggles above the list to show or hide the Weight, Label and Color fields on each row. A label isn't drawn on the wheel. It shows under the winner's name in the pop-up, so you can use it for a prize, a task or a note.

Settings

Open Settings in the top menu.

Keep the winner

Every entry stays on the wheel after each spin, so the same one can win again.

Good for: picking a restaurant, or choosing who goes first each round.

Remove the winner

The winner comes off the wheel automatically when you close the pop-up. Spin again to pick from who's left.

Good for: drawing raffle prizes in order, or a turn order with no repeats.

  • Slices show picks what each slice carries when entries have pictures or logos: both the picture and the name, the picture only, or the name only.
  • Spin time sets how long the wheel spins, from 1 to 20 seconds.
  • Sound plays a tick as each slice passes the pointer. The speaker button at the bottom right of the wheel turns it on or off too.
  • Confetti celebrates the winner. It's skipped automatically if your device is set to reduce motion.
  • Quiz turns each spin into a question when entries have pictures: name the picture, find the picture for a name, or a mix of both, with 2, 4 or 8 answers to pick from. Results marks each answer right or wrong and keeps your score.
  • Language shows Spin in another language. Your wheels stay the same.

The button next to the speaker shows the wheel full screen, which is handy on a projector or stream. Press it again or Esc to go back.

Spin time, sound and confetti are remembered in this browser. Keep or remove and what slices show are saved with each wheel.

Files

There is no Save button. Every wheel you edit is saved automatically to Files in this browser.

  1. Open Files to see your saved wheels, each with a small preview of itself, and click one to open it.
  2. Press the trash icon to delete a wheel, or Undo to bring it back.
  3. Press New wheel to start from a blank wheel. The one you were working on stays in Files.

On a premade or shared wheel, press Save a copy to Files to get your own copy you can change.

Files keeps up to 50 wheels and lives only in this browser. Clearing your browsing data removes it. To move a wheel to another device, share it.

Share a wheel

  1. Open Share in the top menu. You'll see a preview of the wheel you're about to share.
  2. Press Create link, then Copy.
  3. Send the link. Anyone who opens it gets the same entries, weights, colors, pictures and mode, ready to spin.

A link is a snapshot. Changes you make afterwards don't affect it, so create a new link to share an updated wheel. Anyone with the link can open it.

Premade wheels

Tools holds ready-made wheels you can spin straight away:

Is it fair?

Yes, and you can see that it is. Each slice's size matches its chance of winning exactly, so the wheel shows the real odds.

The winner is picked with your browser's cryptographic random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues), the same kind of randomness used for security keys. The wheel then animates to that slice. Nobody, including us, can steer the result.

Questions

Do I need an account?

No. Spinning, saving, sharing and premade wheels all work without one. Logging in, with Google or a code sent to your email, adds one thing: your wheels in Files follow you to any device.

Where are my wheels stored?

Wheels in Files are stored in this browser. If you're logged in, they're also saved to your account on our server; logging out removes them from this browser. Otherwise a wheel is stored on our server only when you create a share link for it.

Can I use it on a projector or a stream?

Yes. The wheel scales to fit the screen and its labels are sized to read from across a room. Capture the browser window in your streaming software.

Can I edit a wheel someone shared with me?

Shared links don't change. Press Save a copy to Files to get your own copy, then edit and share that.

Why does an entry have a bigger slice than the others?

It has a higher weight, or it appears more than once. Check the Odds & colors tab.

The wheel says "Add entries to spin". What happened?

The wheel is empty, or every entry is unticked. Add an entry, or tick entries in the list to put them back on the wheel.
